A Believer Seeks for Islamic Knowledge till Death

Aboo Sa‘eed al-Khudree reported that the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: A believer is never tired of the good he hears till he ends up in Paradise.”[1] At-Tirmidhee said this hadeeth is hasan ghareeb. This version is well known and people have reported it and Ahmad cited most of it in his Musnad; as such, the hadeeth has supporting evidences. The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) made craving for knowledge and never-ending appetite for it as one of the requirements of eemaan and the attributes of the believers. He also informed that this would not cease to be the attitude of a believer until his admission into Paradise.

For this reason, if it is said to anyone among the Imams of Islam: “How long will you seek for knowledge?” He will say, ‘Till death.” Nu‘aym bin Hamaad said: “I heard Abdullaah bin al-Mubaarak saying, despite being criticized by some people for seeking for hadeeth so much, when they asked him: “How long will you continue to listen to hadeeth?” He said, “Till death.”[2] Al-Husayn bin Mansoor al-Khasaas narrated: “I said to Ahmad bin Hanbal, ‘How long should a man write hadeeth?” He said, ‘Till death.”[3] Abdullaah bin Muhammad al-Baghaweee said: “I heard Ahmad bin Hanbal saying, ‘I will seek for knowledge till I enter the grave.”[4]

Muhammad bin Ismaa‘eel as-Saa’igh said: “I was working as a goldsmith with my father in Baghdad one day when Ahmad bin Hanbal passed by us running while carrying his shoe in his hand. Then my father held the edge of his garment and said: “O Aboo Abdullaah, are you not shy? How long will you be running with these people?” He said, “Till death.”[5] Abdullaah bin Bishr at-Taaliqaanee said: “I wish that the command of my Lord (i.e. death) will come while the inkstand is in front of me without detaching me from knowledge and the inkstand.”[6]

Humayd bin Muhammad bin Yazeed al-Basree said, “Ibn Bastaam al-Haafidh came asking me about hadeeth. So I said to him, ‘How extreme is your eagerness for hadeeth!” So he said: “Do you not love that I should be in the train of the family of Allah’s Messenger?” One of the scholars was asked: “When is it good for a man to learn?” He said: “When life is good for him.”[7] Al-Hasan was asked about a man of eighty years old: “Is it good for him to seek for knowledge?” He said, “If it is good for him to live.”[8]
