Ruling on Performing Tayammum with a wall

Ibn ‘Abbaas narrated: “‘Abdullaah bin Yasaar, the freed slave of Maymoonah the wife of the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and I entered upon Aboo Juhaym bin al-Haarith bin as-Simmah al-Ansaaree. Then Aboo al-Juhaym said, ‘The Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was returning from the direction of Bir Jamal[1] and a man met him and greeted him. The Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) did not return the greetings until he turned to a wall (with his hands) and wiped his face and hands and then he returned his greetings.”[2]
Shaykh Abdul-‘Azeem Badawee said: ‘It does not matter if the wall is made of clay or stone, plastered with oil or not. This is the verdict that was given to me by our Shaykh al-Albaanee. Then he said, ‘And your Lord does not forget.’

  1. Salamualaikum Sir, my question is this, according to that hadith why didn't the Holy Prophet (s.a.w) reply the man immediately that he had to do tayyamum on the wall first?

    1. wa alaykum salaam. The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) did not reply him immediately because he does not like mentioning Allaah's name when he is not in a state of purity. al-Muhaajir ibn Qunfudh (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) whilst he was urinating and greeted him with salaam, but he did not return the greeting until he had done wudoo’, then he apologized to me and said: I do not like to mention the name of Allaah unless I am in a state of purity.” A saheeh hadeeth narrated by Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa’ee and Ibn Maajah with a saheeh isnaad.
