Imaam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (may Allaah have
mercy on him) stated:
‘Umar bin Khattaab (may Allah be pleased with
him) said: “He who purifies his intention
in truth even if it is against himself, Allah will protect him against what is between him and the people, but whosoever adorns
himself with what he does not possess, Allah will disgrace him.”
This is similar to prophetic expressions and
has deservingly emanated from the niche of the one endowed with inspiration.
These two statements are from the treasures of knowledge. Whoever employs them appropriately
will benefit others and also derive tremendous benefit.
As regards the first statement, it is the
source and origin of goodness while the second is the root and branch of evils.
This is because if a servant makes his intention sincere to Allah such that his
intention and purpose of his knowledge are geared towards Allah’s pleasure; Allah
will be with him for He is with the pious and the good doers.
The peak of piety and kindness is sincerity of
intention to Allah in establishing the truth and no one can subdue Allah –
exalted be He. So who can defeat or inflict evil to an individual protected by Allah?
If Allah is with a servant, who can cause him fear? And if Allah is not with him,
who can give him something to be hopeful for? Who will he trust? And who will
help him beside Allah?
