Giving Priority to Knowledge of the Qur’aan

Shaykh Muhammad Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen said:
It is obligatory upon the student of knowledge to be devoted to reciting the Noble Qur’aan, memorizing it, understanding it and acting upon it. This is because the Qur’aan is the strong Rope of Allaah. It is the foundation of knowledge… It is unfortunate that some students of knowledge do not memorize the Qur’aan. In fact, some of them cannot recite the Qur’aan properly with tajweed. This is a great drawback in the methodology of seeking knowledge. As such, I reiterate that it is obligatory upon the students of knowledge to be devoted to memorizing the Qur’aan, acting on it, inviting to it and understanding it in accordance with the understanding of the pious predecessors.”

Hereunder are some of the sayings of the Salaf on the need to give priority to the knowledge of the Qur’aan:
Al-Maymoonee said: “I asked Abū ʿAbdullāh Imām Aḥmad: Which is more beloved to you, that I should I begin teaching my son, the Qur’aan or the hadeeth? He said: “No!  The Qur’aan.”  I said: Shall I teach him all of it?  He replied: “Unless that is difficult, in which case teach him some of it.”  Then he said to me: “If he begins reciting first, then he will learn correct recitation and will persevere in it.” [1]
Ibn Taymīyyah (d.718H) – raḥimahullāh – said: “As for seeking to memorize the Qur’aan then this is to be given preference over many of the things that the people consider to be knowledge, but are – in reality – either totally useless or having little benefit. It is also to be given precedence in learning especially by those who wish to acquire knowledge of the Religion, its principles and its particulars.  Since what is prescribed for such a person at this time is that he should begin by memorizing the Qur’aan, as it is the foundation of the branches of knowledge of the Religion.  This is contrary to what is done by many of the people of innovation, in that one of them will pre-occupy himself with superfluous parts of knowledge; such as kalām (theological rhetoric) and argumentation; or very rare matters of differences; and blind following, which there is no need for; or very strange and rare aḥādīth which are not established, nor of benefit; and many discussions do not establish proofs.  And he abandons memorizing the Qur’aan which is more important than all of this.”[2]
Al-Khatīb al-Baghdādī (d.463H) – raḥimahullāh– said: “It is fitting for a student that he begins with memorization of the Book of Allāh – since it is the greatest of the branches of knowledge and that which should be placed first and given precedence.”[3]
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Nawawī (d.676H) – raḥimahullāh– said: “The first thing he should begin with – is memorization of the mighty Qur’aan, which is the most important of the branches of knowledge. And the Companions and those that follow them did not use to teach hadeeth or fiqh except to one who had memorized the Qur’aan When he has memorized it, let him beware of preoccupying himself from it with hadeeth, fiqh or other things, to the extent that it leads him to forget anything of the Qur’aan, or makes that likely."[4][5]

Is it Sunnah to Say Takbeer When Doing Sujoodut-Tilaawah?

Shaykh ‘Aadil Ibn Yoosuf al-‘Azzaazee said:

“Saying takbeer when doing Sujoodus-Tilaawah (prostration of recitation) is not legislated just as it is not legislated to say tasleem. This is because there is no confirmed proof to support it. However, is it allowed to say takbeer in prayer [when going down and coming up] when one comes to a verse in which there is a sajdah (prostration)?

There is no explicit authentic hadeeth that is established regarding this issue. However, Shaykh Ibn al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) opined that it is legislated [to say the takbeer] because of the general meaning of the hadeeth that states that the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) used to say takbeer every time he moved up or down in prayer.

Relieve Pains with Faatihah And Zamzam Water

Imaam Ibn Qayyim stated:

I have tested it myself; that is, using Faatihah as a medication for others and myself and saw many wonderful things especially during my stay in Makkah. I used to feel serious pains such that it almost prevented me from moving during circumambulation and other periods, so I quickly recited Faatihah and wiped it on the spot of the pain and it was just as if a stone just fell off. I tried that several times and used to take a vessel of Zamzam water and recite Faatihah in it many times and drink it, which gives me strength and benefit which I have never witnessed in any other therapy. In fact, the issue is even greater than that. However, it is in accordance with the strength of faith and soundness of conviction. Allah is the One whose help is sought.

Taking Money for Teaching the Qur’aan

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him)
The Shaykh was asked, what is the ruling on accepting wages for teaching the noble Qur’aan in schools of memorizing the Qur’aan?

He responded: There is no harm in that according to the most correct view. This is because accepting wages would assist a person to continue to teach and be patient upon it, because a lot of people may not be able to do it without something (that is payment) if they do not have income with which they would take care of themselves so as to devote their time to the teaching.

Therefore, if a person is given payment for that he will dedicate himself to teaching and benefit the people. Al-Bukhaaree recorded in his authentic collection from Ibn Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said: “The most deserving thing that you take a wage for is the Book of Allaah.” This includes teaching.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him)
Shaykh Ibn al-‘Uthaymeen said:  It is permissible to employ a person to teach the Qur’aan. The following are proofs of that.

Firstly: The statement of the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) in an authentic hadeeth: “The most deserving of thing that you take wages for is the Book of Allaah.”

Secondly: The Messenger of Allaah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) permitted taking of wages for healing as contained in the hadeeth of the man who was stung by a scorpion.

Thirdly: The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) married a woman to a man who did not have dowry and considered her dowry teaching her the Qur’aan that he has memorized. So he made it a compensation. Therefore, the correct opinion is that it is permissible to take wages for teaching the Qur’aan. We have mentioned three proofs. One of them is verbal proof while the other two are practical proofs.

Shaykh al-Albaanee (may Allaah have mercy on him)
Commenting on the hadeeth of Aboo Sa’eed al-Khudree who narrated that a Companion took a herd of sheep for healing somebody by reciting Soorah al-Faatihah, Shaykh al-Albaanee said:

“This hadeeth is clear with regard to the permissibility of accepting wages for healing by reciting Soorah al-Faatihah. As regards, accepting wages for teaching the Qur’aan, it is not permissible according to the correct view among the sayings of the scholars due to the ahaadeeth that have been reported from him (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) condemning the one who takes wages for teaching the Qur’aan. I have mentioned a good number of them in Silsilah ahaadeeth as-Saheehah (256 – 260)

Touching the Qur'aan without Ablution

Questioner: What is the intended meaning of this aayah: “None touch it except the purified.” Does the word al-Mutahharoon (the purified) refer to the believers or those who have ablution?

Shaykh al-Albaanee:  The intended meaning of it is neither this nor that. Rather it refers to the angels and it is a statement from Allaah the Mighty and Majestic concerning the angels; and it does not refer to this Qur’aan [in our midst]. It refers to that which is in the Preserved Tablet. So none can touch the mus-haf, which is in the Preserved Tablet except the purified and they are the angels brought near [to Allaah]…

As regards the mus-haf that is in our midst [today], it can be touched by the righteous and the evil doer, the believer and the disbeliever. Therefore, our Lord is not referring to mankind absolutely regardless of whether they are righteous or evil doers. Rather, what He meant, as we have stated, is the angels….

There are narrations from some of the Companions that they used to avoid touching the Qur’aan without ablution. This action of theirs indicates that what is best for someone who intends to touch the Qur’aan or read the Qur’aan [is to perform ablution]. However, to assert that it is prohibited for a woman who is not in the state of purity, not to speak of a man, to touch the Qur’aan, then there is no proof for that at all.

Saying Salaam to Someone Reciting the Qur'aan

‘Uqbah Ibn ‘Aamir al-Juhanee (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated: “We were sitting in the mosque reading the Qur’aan; then the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) entered and greeted us with the greeting of salaam; so we replied him with the greeting of salaam. Then he (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Learn the Book of Allaah, acquire it and recite it beautifully. By the One in Whose Hand is the life of Muhammad, it (that is, the Qur’an) is more likely to slip away from you than the camel which is tied.”

Commenting on the above narration, Shaykh al-Albaanee said: “From the fiqh (understanding) contained in this hadeeth is that, it is legislated to greet a person sitting reciting the Qur’aan with the greeting of salaam. It [also] contains a refutation of whoever is of the view that it is disliked to do so. In spite of the fact that such is a mere opinion, it contradicts this hadeeth and the general meaning of the Prophet’s statement: “Spread Salaam amongst yourselves.”
If it is authentically established that the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) gave approval to the Companions when they greeted him with the greeting of Salaam while he was performing Salaah in Masjid Qubaa’, and that he would respond to their greetings by making a gesture with his noble hand - then it is more deserving that it should be legislated to offer the greeting of Salaam to someone reciting the Qur’aan outside of the Salaah. And in this case, the reply should be expressed orally, not by gesturing, as is not hidden from the people of understanding. And this is the view of an-Nawawee (may Allaah have mercy on him)
