Gold
and silver are both among the minerals created by Allaah on earth. And Allaah the Exalted created them for us as
He stated [in this verse]: “It is He Who has created for you everything
on the earth.” (2: 29). Therefore,
we should make use of the gold and silver the way we wish except when there is
a legislation prohibiting it. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم forbade eating from gold and silver
vessels. He صلى
الله عليه وسلم stated that they are for the disbelievers
in this world and for us in the Hereafter[1].
He also stated that anyone who eats or drinks from a silver vessel is filling
his stomach with the fire of Hell.[2] Hence eating and drinking in gold and silver
utensils is among the major sins. And it is not permissible for a believer to
do that.
As
for using gold and silver utensils for other things, there is difference of
opinions among the scholars. The majority of scholars say that it is not
permissible to make use of gold and silver utensils in other ways just as it is
not permissible to use them for eating and drinking. So it is not permissible
to use them as containers for medicines, or containers for money or what is
similar to that. This is because the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم forbade eating and drinking in them
and what is other than that is similar to it.
Some
scholars permit it. They say: We will limit it to what the text stipulates.
Using them for other things is not unlawful. This is because the asl
(the basis of everything) is permissibility. Moreover, Umm Salamah (may Allaah
be pleased with her) who was one of those who reported the hadeeth
prohibiting eating and drinking in gold and silver utensils had a container
made of silver where she used to keep the hairs of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in which people treat themselves with. People used to use it
for their treatment and they would be cured by the Leave of Allaah. So she was
using silver for other than eating and drinking (purposes).
This
is what is most correct. That is, using gold and silver for other than eating
and drinking (purposes) is permissible. However, it is better to leave it so as
to be on the safer side, in conformity with the view of majority of scholars.
